Lenses

Image-Pro provides you a way to manage lens definitions so that they can be associated with cameras and the images captured from those cameras.  It is useful to link captured images to a specific lens so that magnification, refractivity, aperture, and other characteristics of the lens that affect the quality and appearance of the image data can be recalled for use in image analysis and calculations.

Also, spatial calibrations can be associated with lenses and, when the lens is applied to the camera prior to capturing images, Image-Pro automatically applies the associated lens specifications and spatial calibration definition to all subsequent captured images. This way you don't have to worry about apply lens and spatial calibration characteristics to captured images after they have been captured.

Lens management tasks can be performed through the Lenses dialog box.  To open the Lenses dialog box, go to the Capture ribbon and click on the Options button to the right of the Lens list box in the Optical Characteristics group. The Lenses dialog box will be displayed in the Details panel to the right of the application workspace. The Lenses dialog box is divided into two parts:

  • The Lenses area. (Click here for more information.)
  • The Lens Library area. (Click here for more information.)

The "Lenses" Area

The top part of the Lenses dialog box -- the Lenses area -- allows you to create new lens definitions, modify existing lens definitions, and select the lens definition that you want to be the "Active Lens" -- the lens that is applied automatically to all captured images as you capture them.

Add: Click this tool to add a new lens definition to the list of available lens definitions.  When you click this tool, a new lens definition is added with all of the fields set to their default values.  Simply type over the default name appearing in the Name field -- and all other default values in the other fields -- with the actual name and specifications for the new lens definition.

Load:  Click this tool to load a predefined list of lens definition from a file.  The file would have been previously saved using the Save tool (described below).

Save:  Click this tool to save the current set of lens definitions to a file.  The file can be loaded at a later time using the Load tool (described above).

Delete: Click this tool to delete the lens definition currently appearing in the Name list box from the collection of available lenses.  Note that this action does not delete the lens definition from the lens library, nor does it delete it from collections stored as files.  This only removes it from the list of active lenses.

Delete All: Click this tool to delete all of the lens definitions from the collection of available lenses.  Note that this action does not delete the lens definitions from the lens library, nor does it delete them from collections stored as files.  This only removes them from the list of active lenses.

Apply:  Click this tool to apply the lens definition currently appearing int he Name list box to the currently active image.

Name:  This list box lists all custom (user-defined) lens definitions and system-supplied lens definitions that have been tagged as 'favorites'.

You can type over the name appearing in this list box to give the selected lens definition a new name.

Lenses in this list are available for being applied to captured images and/or the capture environment -- these are the lenses that appear in the Lens pull-down list box of the Optical Characteristics group.  Lenses are added to the Name list box by either using the Add Lens tool or by making one of the lenses listed in the Lens Library area a 'favorite'.

Click the Set as Active Lens tool to the right of the Name text box in order to set the currently-selected lens definition as the "Active Lens" -- the lens that is automatically applied to all captured images as they are captured.

Magnification: In this spin box, enter the magnification information for the currently selected lens (typically a number from .001 to 3000).

Refractive Index: In this spin box, enter the Refractive Index for the currently selected lens; or select one of the standard refractive indexes for air, water, glycerin or oil from the drop-down list box. If a refractive index is manually entered, the list box will be set to Custom (even if the value entered is one of the standard RI values).

Numeric Aperture: In this spin box, enter the Numeric Aperture for the currently selected lens.  This must be a number from 1.0 to 2.0.

Manufacturer/Part Number/Description:  These text boxes are provided so that you can record general information about the lens, if desired.

Calibration:  This list box lists all available "Reference" spatial calibrations.  Select a calibration definition to link it to the lens currently selected in the Name list box.  If a calibration definition is selected, whenever that lens is applied to an image, the calibration definition will be also.  If you select "(none)", the lens will not be associated with a calibration.  If "(none)" is selected, images' existing calibration information will not be affected when the lens is applied to it.

The "Lens Library" Area

The Lens Library area is the system-supplied master list of lens definitions.  It contains a list of lens definitions for lenses by Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Zeiss, and more.  You can use it to easily add and remove predefined lens configurations to/from the list of currently-available lenses in the "Lenses" area.  Simply check the box next to a lens to add it to the list of currently-available lenses.  When you find a lens that you are looking for, check the checkbox to the left of the lens definition to mark it as a "Favorite".

The Manufacturer and Magnification fields are provided so that you can quickly and easily find a lens definition in the library. Simply select the desired manufacturer from the Manufacturer list box, and select the desired magnification from the Magnification list box. Image-Pro will display only lenses that meet the specified criteria.
